Elevator Pump Noise Mitigation

Phoenix Noise & Vibration was contacted by an architectural design and construction company regarding an on-going complaint from condominium tenants who had expressed concerns over noise generated by a hydraulic elevator pump. The pump was located in a mechanical room directly below their condo unit. With every operation of the elevator, the tenants could clearly hear and feel the pump throughout their condo; however the pump noise and vibration impact was most noticeable in the dining and living room areas where a majority of their daytime and leisurely hours were spent. Site visits were made to measure the existing noise and vibration levels in order to determine the path of the noise transmission to the condo. Based on the measurements and site inspections, mitigation designs were developed to eliminate the noise and vibration transmission from the pump room into the condo.

Installation of the mitigation designs was overseen by a licensed Phoenix Noise & Vibration engineer during several construction administration inspections. Upon
completion of the remedial work, post-construction noise
measurements revealed that the noise level impact within
the effected condo had been significantly reduced from a
noise level of NC 37 to NC 19. More importantly, the
condo residents stated complete satisfaction with the
mitigation results, noticing a considerable difference
since the installation to the point that elevator
noise no longer interrupted their ability to comfortably
enjoy their everyday activities.
